Morocco’s AMMC Steps Up Financial Education to Fight Online Scams

Financial fraud no longer waits outside the door — it slides straight into private messaging apps, dressed up as a friendly investment tip. That reality is exactly what Morocco’s capital markets regulator wants savers to internalize. For the tenth year running, the Moroccan Capital Market Authority, AMMC, is taking part in World Investor Week, a global awareness campaign coordinated by the International Organization of Securities Commissions since 2017 and now backed by more than a hundred regulators worldwide.

Each edition of the campaign zeroes in on a specific angle of investor protection, and this year AMMC picked a theme that mirrors the moment: building resilience against digital deception. Fake brokers on social media, phishing links disguised as account alerts, and too-good-to-be-true return promises are multiplying as fast as Moroccans’ own digital habits, and the regulator wants the public equipped to spot them before money changes hands.

The plan runs from October 5 through the end of November 2026, and it is deliberately hands-on. A new instalment of AMMC’s « Investor Guide » series is due out, walking savers through the basic checks to run before parking money anywhere. The authority also announced an upcoming first online course on stock market investing, to be hosted on its « Let’s Understand the Capital Market » platform, an attempt to strip away the jargon that keeps many first-time investors on the sidelines. Rounding out the push, a themed quiz on equity savings plans will go live on the « Quiz Finance » mobile app, turning financial literacy into something closer to a game than a lecture.

The timing is no accident. Morocco’s stock exchange has drawn a growing wave of retail investors in recent years, buoyed by strong returns on the Casablanca Stock Exchange, and AMMC is watching that enthusiasm with cautious approval: more first-time investors also means more potential targets for scammers exploiting their inexperience. A single sponsored ad or a convincing fake profile is sometimes all it takes to empty a novice’s savings account.

Beyond the institutional messaging, this annual push reflects a broader shift among financial regulators globally, who increasingly treat education as a frontline defense alongside enforcement. In Morocco, AMMC appears to be turning that principle into a standing commitment rather than a one-off campaign.
