Women’s World Cup 2027: Draw Set for December 11 in Rio

Rio de Janeiro will host football’s next big reveal. FIFA confirmed on Tuesday that the final draw for the 2027 Women’s World Cup will take place on December 11 at Rio’s Museum of Modern Art, set against the backdrop of Guanabara Bay and Sugarloaf Mountain.

More than a thousand guests are expected to attend, including delegates from nations that have already secured their spot — Morocco among them — alongside representatives of teams still fighting for qualification. Local officials, tournament partners and international media will round out the guest list.

For Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses, the ceremony carries real weight. It is there that the team will learn its group and discover its opening opponents in a tournament already being billed as historic: never before has the Women’s World Cup been staged on South American soil.

Thirty-two national teams will compete across 64 matches spread over eight host cities. Once the draw concludes, FIFA will release the tournament’s full match schedule, detailing host cities and kick-off times for every group-stage fixture.

The choice of venue is deliberate. Organizers say the Museum of Modern Art was selected to forge a connection between Brazilian art and « futebol arte » — the free-flowing, expressive style of play long associated with the country. The tournament’s visual identity draws on the same idea, built around artwork from creators based in each host city.

« Football is often called a universal language, but in Brazil, it’s also a form of art, » said Jill Ellis, FIFA’s Chief Football Officer. Aline Pellegrino, FIFA Brazil’s executive director for legacy and stakeholder relations, echoed that sentiment, describing the museum as a fitting way to celebrate « futebol arte » as an inseparable part of Brazilian identity. Rio, she added, was a natural fit to host « one of the most important milestones » on the road to the tournament.

Anticipation for the 2027 edition is already running high. More than 800,000 people have expressed interest in buying tickets, while over 95,000 have applied to join the volunteer program — numbers that underline how far women’s football has come, and how closely Morocco’s own campaign will be watched as the countdown to Rio continues.
