Botola Pro: Wydad Casablanca Held to a Draw by Amal Tiznit (1-1)

Wydad Athletic Club failed to deliver for its home crowd on Sunday evening. In matchday four of Morocco’s Botola Pro championship, the Casablanca giants were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Amal Tiznit, a southern side that showed no fear on the capital’s biggest football stage.

Things started poorly for the hosts. Amal Tiznit struck first from the penalty spot, with Zakaria Salhi coolly chipping a Panenka-style finish past the Wydad goalkeeper to silence much of the home support and energize the visiting bench. Trailing in their own stadium, Wydad were forced to search for answers.

The equalizer did not arrive until the 62nd minute, and once again it came from a penalty. This time it was Congolese forward Silver Kovula who stepped up, calmly sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to level the score. The goal reignited hopes of a home win for a Wydad side backed by a sizeable crowd eager to see their team return to winning ways.

In the closing stages, Wydad pressed forward in search of a winner, throwing players into the attack and committing numbers up front. That gamble, however, opened gaps at the back that Amal Tiznit tried to exploit on the counter-attack, though without seriously testing the Casablanca defense again. The scoreline held until the final whistle.

The result is a setback for Wydad’s ambitions early in the season. Accustomed to controlling matches on their own turf, the Casablanca club missed a chance to cement a place among the Botola Pro’s leading pack, and will need to regroup quickly before its next fixture.

For Amal Tiznit, the point earned away from home against one of Morocco’s most decorated clubs carries real significance. The southern side is signaling that it intends to fight for every point this season rather than simply make up the numbers, as it works to secure its place in the top flight.

Both teams will now turn their attention to the next round of the championship, looking either to build on Sunday’s result or to correct the lessons learned from an eventful evening at the stadium.
