A major blow has been dealt to international drug trafficking off Morocco’s Mediterranean coast. On Tuesday afternoon, Morocco’s National Security services, working closely with the Customs and Excise Administration, foiled a large-scale cocaine smuggling operation at the container terminal of Tanger Med port, one of the busiest shipping hubs in the western Mediterranean.
According to a security source, the illicit cargo, a striking 971 kilograms of cocaine, had been carefully concealed inside refrigerated containers loaded aboard a vessel flying the flag of a Latin American country. The discovery came during a joint inspection carried out under the reinforced customs checks now routinely applied at Tanger Med, after officers detected irregularities and proceeded to search the suspect containers.
Early findings from the investigation, now being led by Tangier’s judicial police under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office, suggest the shipment had left a port in Brazil before transiting through Morocco, with a port in West Africa listed as its final destination. This logistics pattern, which effectively turns the Kingdom into a transshipment point along an international drug route, echoes several similar cases uncovered in recent months involving transatlantic cocaine trafficking toward Europe and Africa.
Beyond the sheer scale of the seizure, the international dimension of the follow-up investigation stands out. Interpol’s National Central Bureau in Rabat has been tasked with coordinating exchanges with foreign police forces to trace the full extent of the criminal network behind the shipment, from the South American organizers to any local intermediaries.
The operation once again highlights the effectiveness of the security apparatus deployed around Tanger Med, a port frequently cited by international anti-narcotics bodies as a strategic chokepoint on the cocaine route between South America and Europe. Moroccan authorities, who have logged a growing string of record seizures in recent years, are keen to reinforce their standing as a reliable partner in international security cooperation.
The judicial investigation continues as authorities work to identify everyone involved in the trafficking attempt, from shippers and carriers to the presumed recipients in West Africa.
