Qatar and Saudi Arabia Hold Call on Regional De-escalation in the Middle East

Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, spoke by phone on Wednesday with his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, in a call focused on bilateral ties and the broader push to calm tensions across the Gulf region. The conversation was disclosed in a statement from Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, posted on social media shortly after the call ended.

According to the ministry’s account, the two top diplomats reviewed the latest regional developments and discussed closer coordination between Doha and Riyad to de-escalate ongoing frictions and shore up security and stability in the wider Gulf. The call continues a pattern of frequent consultations between the two Gulf Cooperation Council members, who have both signaled a shared interest in preventing any further military escalation near the Strait of Hormuz.

Sheikh Mohammed reaffirmed Doha’s backing for every diplomatic track aimed at guaranteeing freedom of navigation through the region’s strategic waterways, a concern that weighs heavily on Gulf economies and on global energy markets alike. He argued that such a guarantee could pave the way toward a comprehensive agreement capable of delivering lasting peace, after months of friction between Iran and the United States reignited fears of disruption to oil shipping lanes.

The outreach fits into a wider pattern of quiet Qatari diplomacy in recent weeks, with Doha positioning itself as a discreet but active mediator among several Gulf and regional capitals. The two foreign ministers also agreed to keep an open line of communication to track how the situation evolves and to align their positions inside regional and international forums.

Neither side has announced a timetable for a possible higher-level meeting, but both Doha and Riyad underlined a shared determination to avoid any fresh escalation that could further destabilize a region already strained by several overlapping crises.
