Morocco: Laftit Hosts Senegalese Minister to Boost Security Cooperation

Morocco’s Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit welcomed his Senegalese counterpart in Rabat on Tuesday, opening a new chapter in security cooperation between the two West African partners.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Interior’s headquarters, brought together Laftit and Mohamedou Mokhtar Cissé, Senegal’s Minister of Interior and Public Security, for talks described by both sides as reflecting the longstanding bonds of friendship and brotherhood between Rabat and Dakar. Officials on both sides underlined their shared determination to deepen institutional consultation and expand the exchange of technical expertise between their respective ministries.

Security featured prominently on the agenda, an area where Morocco has steadily built a reputation across the African continent over the past two decades. Civil protection also came under discussion, with both delegations exploring ways to pool lessons learned in disaster response and risk management, two fields where Moroccan agencies have been increasingly called upon to share know-how with regional partners.

A particularly notable theme running through the talks was the organization of major sporting events. Morocco has positioned itself in recent years as a continental hub for hosting large-scale competitions, accumulating logistical and security expertise that neighboring African nations are now eager to tap into. Tuesday’s discussions suggested Senegal views Morocco’s experience in this area as a model worth studying closely, particularly as both countries look toward an increasingly packed calendar of continental sporting fixtures in the years ahead.

By the end of the session, the two ministers pledged to keep channels of communication open on issues of mutual concern, framing the visit as part of a broader push toward South-South cooperation that Rabat and Dakar have repeatedly held up as an example of African solidarity. The talks also fit into a wider pattern of Moroccan diplomacy on the continent, where the kingdom has been steadily expanding bilateral partnerships spanning security, defense and economic sectors.

Neither delegation offered a specific timetable for turning Tuesday’s commitments into concrete action, though officials from both ministries stressed the need to move swiftly from stated intentions to tangible cooperation on the ground.
