Marrakech Power Outages Spark Anger in Douar Lakhdir

Residents on the outskirts of Marrakech have had enough. In Douar Lakhdir, a small village under the rural commune of Tasseltant, families say they have endured recurring power outages for years, with no lasting fix in sight. The latest blackout stretched on for several days straight, leaving part of the village without electricity just as temperatures climbed sharply.

What frustrates residents most is the uneven nature of the problem: only one section of the village appears to be hit with the same regularity, and no official explanation has ever been offered for why. Complaints have reportedly been filed more than once with the relevant utility services, villagers say, yet responses have been slow to come, when they come at all.

Beyond the daily inconvenience, the outages are hitting household budgets directly. Every extended blackout knocks out refrigerators and freezers, spoiling food supplies at a moment when the heat makes that loss especially costly. For many families, particularly those with modest incomes, the repeated damage adds up to a real financial strain.

In response, residents of Douar Lakhdir are now appealing directly to the head of the regional electricity distribution company, asking for personal intervention to diagnose the recurring fault once and for all. They are also calling on the regional governor (wali) to step in, hoping that regional authority can finally unblock a file they feel has dragged on for far too long. Villagers further point to delays in infrastructure work tied to connections for electricity, drinking water and sewage networks, work they say must move forward before the outages can realistically stop.

Complaints of this kind are far from unique in rural Morocco, where expanding and modernizing electricity distribution networks remains a significant challenge, especially on the fringes of major cities where demand is growing faster than the infrastructure meant to serve it. The question now is whether this latest appeal from Tasseltant will finally reach an attentive ear at the regional utility and among local authorities, or whether it will join a long list of grievances that went unanswered, a cry lost in the wilderness.
