Yemen: Houthis Shell Marib as Army Repels Attack in Taiz

Fighting flared again across Yemen on Monday, dashing hopes that the fragile calm of recent weeks might hold. In Marib province, a vital stronghold of the internationally recognized government, Houthi fighters unleashed a fresh barrage targeting military positions, sending residents already worn down by months of conflict scrambling for cover. Hundreds of kilometers to the south, in Taiz — Yemen’s third-largest city and the site of a near-permanent siege by the Iran-aligned movement — government troops say they beat back a large-scale assault, inflicting heavy casualties on the attackers.

The latest flare-up comes on the heels of « Fajr al-Yaman » (« Dawn of Yemen »), an offensive launched by loyalist forces to loosen the Houthi grip on several key areas. A government commander killed in recent clashes was laid to rest on Monday in a solemn funeral broadcast by several local outlets, with comrades hailing him as a fallen hero.

The reverberations of the conflict are not confined to Yemeni soil. Saudi Arabia’s civil defense agency announced Monday morning that the danger had passed in the border region of Jizan, following an alert tied to intercepted projectile debris. Washington, for its part, renewed its warnings: the US embassy in Iraq urged Americans across the Middle East to exercise extreme caution amid an increasingly volatile regional climate.

On the diplomatic front, behind-the-scenes contacts are multiplying in an effort to contain the spiral, though no concrete breakthrough has been announced so far. The war between the Saudi-backed government and the Houthi movement, which has held the capital Sanaa for more than a decade, has repeatedly outlasted ceasefire attempts, drawing in regional and global powers and turning the country into one of the most devastating conflicts of the past decade.

For millions of Yemenis already gripped by one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, the renewed hostilities raise fears of yet another downturn in an already dire situation, just as winter approaches and international aid grows scarcer.
