Morocco-Saudi Arabia: Mohammed VI Affirms Full Solidarity Amid Houthi Attacks

King Mohammed VI has sent an unambiguous message to Riyadh as Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia continue to escalate. In two separate telegrams addressed to King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, and to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Moroccan monarch expressed what the Royal Palace described as Morocco’s « full solidarity » with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The wording chosen by the king went well beyond diplomatic courtesy. Mohammed VI stated that « the security and stability of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia… form an integral part of the security of the Kingdom of Morocco, » a formulation analysts say signals something closer to a shared strategic doctrine than a routine expression of Arab solidarity.

Several layers of meaning run through the message. On the religious front, Morocco’s king, who also holds the title of Commander of the Faithful, positions the kingdom as a natural defender of the safety of Islam’s holiest sites, which have repeatedly come under Houthi missile and drone fire launched from Yemen. Legally, Rabat’s stance echoes a series of United Nations Security Council resolutions that have condemned attacks on Saudi territorial integrity. Historically, the two monarchies have built decades of cooperation spanning economic, security and religious affairs.

It is the strategic dimension, however, that has drawn the most attention from regional analysts. By explicitly tying Saudi security to its own national security, Morocco is sending a clear signal across the Gulf region at a time when tensions around the Red Sea and the Bab-el-Mandeb strait keep threatening international shipping lanes and wider regional stability.

Morocco’s statement lands as Western capitals and several Arab chancelleries step up calls for restraint amid the escalating Houthi campaign. By choosing such direct language, Rabat is once again signaling its ambition to carry diplomatic weight on major regional security files, well beyond its immediate North African neighborhood and the question of Western Sahara.
