Iran Names New Defense Minister as Strait of Hormuz Crisis Deepens

Iran has entered a fresh phase of military and diplomatic tension. The country’s parliament has approved Mehrdad Akhlaghi Ketabchi as the new Minister of Defense, according to state media, at a moment when Tehran is facing mounting pressure from Washington over its nuclear program and a dangerous escalation in the Strait of Hormuz.

The appointment comes against a particularly volatile backdrop. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard announced on Saturday that two oil tankers caught fire in the strait after each struck a mine, reviving fears of a wider confrontation around one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, through which a significant share of global oil shipments pass. For its part, Washington is now demanding concrete nuclear guarantees from Tehran, a condition that adds to months of diplomatic wrangling since the two capitals signed a memorandum of understanding earlier this year.

US President Donald Trump stated that operations related to Iran « would come to an end soon, » though he offered no timeline or details on what that might involve. The remark, made while tensions in the region remain at a peak, has been read by some observers as a cautious signal of de-escalation, but it has so far not translated into any visible shift on the ground.

On the diplomatic front, Iran’s foreign minister has urged Washington to accept a proposal that would fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping, a route that is vital to global energy supplies and has already been disrupted repeatedly since the crisis began. Meanwhile, Egypt said it stood ready to provide Saudi Arabia with « all necessary and possible support, » a statement that underscores how deeply the recent wave of maritime incidents has unsettled Gulf capitals.

The new ministerial appointment therefore unfolds against a backdrop of prolonged crisis, with Tehran seeking to reinforce its defense apparatus while at least officially continuing to search for a negotiated way out. Whether this change at the helm of the Defense Ministry signals a genuine strategic shift, or is mainly an internal adjustment meant to reassure the Iranian public at an uncertain moment, remains to be seen. Washington’s reaction to the appointment, along with developments in the days ahead, are likely to prove decisive for a region already under considerable strain.
