Morocco: Dating App Scam Ring Dismantled in Martil

Moroccan police have broken up what investigators describe as a carefully staged trap built around a popular dating app, arresting four suspects — two of them young women — in the coastal town of Martil, part of the M’diq-Fnideq prefecture.

The case came together after a string of complaints about meetings arranged through the dating app that ended not in romance but in robbery. According to security officials, one of the detained women is suspected of posing as a willing match, luring men who had connected with her through the app to a furnished apartment in one of the town’s working-class neighborhoods. Once there, her alleged accomplices would move in.

The pattern, investigators say, was consistent: a victim would arrive expecting a date, only to be ambushed, intimidated and stripped of his phone, cash or other valuables before being sent on his way — often too embarrassed by the circumstances to report the crime right away. That reluctance, officers believe, may explain why the scheme appears to have run for some time before it was detected.

Judicial police in Martil tracked the group through methodical fieldwork, eventually pinpointing the exact apartment being used as bait and arresting all four suspects in a single operation. The charges under consideration are serious: running a den of prostitution, fraud, and theft by deception.

The investigation, now under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office, is far from closed. Detectives are working to identify any additional victims who have not yet come forward, and are also examining the role of rental intermediaries and furnished-apartment brokers who supplied the flat, to determine whether they knew — or should have known — what it was being used for.

The episode adds to a growing list of cautionary tales Moroccan authorities have raised about dating apps, where the anonymity that makes a first message easy can just as easily hide intentions far removed from romance. Investigators say establishing exactly who knew what, among both the arrested suspects and anyone who facilitated the rental, will be central to the case as it heads toward prosecution.
