Ceuta: Night of Tension as Residents Try to Expel Undocumented Migrants

Ceuta went through a tense night between Wednesday and Thursday, as dozens of frustrated residents took to the streets demanding the removal of undocumented migrants who have been camped for weeks along the coastline of the occupied city. The spontaneous evening protest headed toward an area locally known as « Trampoline Beach, » where dozens of migrants have been living in precarious humanitarian conditions.

According to local media reports, the demonstrators sought to pressure authorities into immediately clearing the site, describing the situation as no longer sustainable for nearby residents. As tensions escalated, Spanish national police and riot units were rushed in, setting up a substantial security cordon to prevent direct contact between angry locals and migrants and to head off any wider clashes.

This is not an isolated episode. It reflects a broader climate of social and security exhaustion that has been building in Ceuta for several weeks, as the number of migrants stranded on this stretch of coastline keeps rising. Local associations and ordinary residents have long been calling for firmer intervention from Spanish authorities, arguing that operations carried out so far have fallen short.

City authorities had in fact stepped up transfer and evacuation operations in recent days in an attempt to ease pressure on the affected beaches. Yet those efforts were not enough to prevent migrants from regrouping at the Trampoline site, a sign that migratory pressure on this part of the territory continues to outstrip the reception and management capacity deployed on the ground.

The situation in Ceuta once again highlights the complexity of a migration file that extends well beyond the local level. As an occupied Moroccan city, Ceuta has for years sat at the center of migration flows toward Europe, without Spanish authorities managing to deliver a lasting response, whether on the humanitarian front or in terms of coexistence with a local population whose patience is increasingly wearing thin.

The night’s tensions serve as a reminder, if one were needed, of the urgent need for a structural solution to this file, which keeps fueling frustration and mutual incomprehension on both sides, between exhausted residents and migrants left largely to fend for themselves on a coastal strip that has become a recurring flashpoint. No injuries have been reported by local authorities at this stage.
